OK, so this is my first review ever. So be kind: Do not hesitate to tell me if anything is wrong in order to improve it.
Sorry for my English, do not hesitate to correct me as well.
For the review I have chosen the MP5 from Classic Army. I have two of them actually:
- B&T MP5A2 with standard S.E.F. trigger group.
- B&T MP5A3 with Navy trigger group.
Why a MP5 (in general):
So, why did I choose a MP5?
- First of all, because of its compact shape, very useful in CQB with a barrel long enough for medium range.
- Second, the mags, since MP5s are popular, you can find variety of mags made either from metal or plastic at a good price. Also they are quite compact, even if they are a bit long. So it is easy to carry number of them without any problem.
- Third, I really like the H&K type sight.
- Last, due to its popularity there are a lot of accessories that are available.
Summary:
Pro:
- Compact
- Light
- The mags are easy to carry
- The sight
- A lot of accessories available
Cons:
- Sometimes difficult to shoot in prone position due to the mags length
- No picatinny rail by default
Why Classic Army?
When I wanted to buy my first MP5 I decided that I wanted something reliable that will last long and I was tired of plastic made replicas. So I had a look on Airsoft forums and it appears that if you want a good MP5 it as to be ICS or Classic Army. ICS are quite difficult to find in France and anyway the look and marking of B&T MP5s from Classic Army is, to my mind, awesome.
The replica:
First of all, one important thing is that I have not tested the Classic Army right out of the box.
Two things I usually change by default when buying Classic Army stuff are:
- The spring in order to get to 350 fps (normally CA replicas are a bit less powerful)
- The inner barrel, putting a 6.04 barrel better that the default 6.08 barrel
The result is that after having playing with my CA MP5 for about two month I am really satisfied with it.
The full metal body feels very solid. Classic Army is selling Brügger & Thomet (B&T) version of MP5s. I guess this is because they did not get the license to sell it with Heckler & Koch (H&K) marking. Anyway the marking on the replica are nice. I will post pictures later on.
Now, the accuracy is quite good for such a short barrel. I feel really comfortable at medium range and even long range.
To be more precise: At long range a single shot will sometime miss the target but a small burst will do the job. At medium I often shoot in single mode.
Depending on the game rules and the people I am playing with, I bought 6 x 100 rds mags and 6 x 50 rds mags. Full metal, very reliable I never had any miss feed with it. I use the 50 rds ones while playing with the CES.
On the other side the default hi-cap mag is… How can I say…? Crap (pardon my French).
Other drawbacks are the following:
- On my MP5 that has the Navy type trigger, the selector is not very stable. And it can happen that I switch from one fire mode to another without wanting to.
- Another thing is that the cooking lever does not sound very reliable so I recommend not playing with it too often.
Summary:
Pro:
- Metal body
- Accuracy after replacing the default 6.08 inner barrel
- Reliable low and mid cap mags
- B&T marking
Cons:
- Trigger not very stable on one of the two MP5s I have
- Cooking lever can easily be broken
- Default Hi-Cap mag is really bad
- Default 6.08 inner barrel (same problem with all Classic Army products)
To conclude:
As an H&K addicted I had to get at least one MP5 in my life. Now I think the Classic Army MP5 is a good compromise if you want something quite reliable that will last for long. Compared to my good old G36C, the MP5 has a lot of advantages and the result is that I never used my G36C anymore since I bought my first MP5.
